Why the Earthquakes?

Why have there been a spate of recent relatively high magnitude temblors ranging across oceans and continents? In these events thankfully there has been remarkably little loss of life. A God-fearing person might even surmise that the Lord is giving us a chance to turn from the error of our ways.
