Chaos in Algeria
Algeria failed to protect foreign workers, refused to allow foreign special forces to conduct a professional rescue attempt, and then botched their own effort in a disastrous way. This is the kind of tragedy that can ensue when First Worlders try to lift Third Worlders out of their miserable circumstances. It is also what happens in areas where so-called "infidels" attempt outreach to the Muslim world. Western weakness was also manifest in allowing Algerian authorities to fail so utterly when in an earlier era, so-called "colonial" powers would have orchestrated a rescue or seen to it that security was sufficient that there would have been no hostage-taking in the first place.
