Beating War Drums
Israel has not loudly urged the United States to attack Syria. Turkey has sought more robust international intervention against Assad, but the most vigorous proponents of America taking sides against Assad have been the Sunni Arab states, particularly Saudi Arabia. In opposing an Alawite regime with abundant Shia backing from Iran and Lebanese Hezbollah, the Sunnis are revealing their true face that is more intolerant of other brands of Islam than anything else. The United States should not be goaded into a war against America's self-interests to settle internal Muslim scores or even end internecine violence between the two equally culpable parties in Syria's relentless bloodletting.
