America's Great Race?

For generations, the Indianapolis 500 was undeniably the most significant automobile race in the United States. Then, some hillbillies, many of whom ran illegal liquor, decided they could race cars too. They so far surpassed Indy cars that it is no longer even a contest. Those country boys, fill up a raceway with more folks than the 500 draws, more than a dozen times per year. Indianapolis and open cockpit racing is still thrilling, but America's iconic competitions now clearly involve modified stock cars.
